LEHE ELARAR
A career in midwifery is an evolutionary process;
she who chooses it inevitably reshapes her character
and form, adapts her lifestyle and philosophy, and
constantly emerges with new learning and new
experiences. When I first heard about midwifery, I
was relieved to see a profession that safeguarded
a woman's choices about birth. I was interested to
learn as much as I could and spread awareness
about midwifery care, as that was a time when
midwifery was not yet regulated. Many years later, I am pleased to be a part of a vibrant, brilliant community of midwives and midwifery clients.
I grew up in Vancouver; these beaches, mountains and streams are my home. Throughout many travels around the world and several years in Montreal, where I completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Anthropology, Vancouver has remained the place I return to. I studied midwifery at the Seattle Midwifery School. Kat and I were in the same class and that is where our dreams for Pomegranate were born.
My practice includes being an active member of my professional group, a co-founder of Pomegranate Community Midwives and a mentor for midwifery and medical students. I value a growing profession that strives to bring midwifery to women at large.
I see midwifery as a profession that provides excellent, comprehensive care to women, supports our community of families and advocates for ongoing research in maternity care. As a mother of two, I appreciate the special relationship between midwife and client, and how we can be empowered by our experience of pregnancy and birth.
