The experience of pregnancy and
childbirth is an incredible journey ---
while it is a normal life event, it is also
a glorious, challenging, and transfor-
mational process that will undoubtedly
change your life forever. Whether you are going through this for the first time, or consider yourself a seasoned parent, midwifery has much to offer you, and I sincerely welcome you to Pomegranate Community Midwives.
What drew me to midwifery initially was a profound interest in women’s life cycles; and a deep respect for that moment—that unforgettable change that occurs when a family gives birth to itself. Working as a midwife has reinforced to me that when families feel supported, safe and listened to throughout the childbearing process, it greatly enhances their experience of pregnancy and birth. Providing families with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their care allows them to enter into parenting feeling confident and capable. I have seen over and over that community based, holistic midwifery offers an opportunity to play a role in the collective empowerment of women, families and communities.
I began my studies in midwifery prior to the profession being regulated in BC, which led to me to pursue education through an apprenticeship and completion of the midwifery program at Maternidad La Luz in the USA.
Since beginning practice in 1999, I’ve had a personal commitment to improve access to midwifery care for all women. I worked in a reproductive health clinic in the US serving women without health insurance coverage. I provided fertility counseling and conception services to the queer community. I also practiced as a midwife and herbalist in the Yukon, providing rural maternity care and promoting women’s health in the North. I was then offered a teaching position at Maternidad La Luz’s midwifery education program and birth centre which served the USA/Mexico border community, providing care to women marginalized by the conventional health care system. I enjoyed teaching and managing the birth centre as Clinical Co-Director, coordinating our practice to care for 700 birthing families a year; but my greatest love was working as a midwife and attending births.
As much as I loved working on the border, missing Canada led me to Ontario. I had my US education validated by Ryerson University, then practiced with Diversity Midwives, predominantly providing care to families new to Canada.
Here at Pomegranate since 2006, I’ve enjoyed caring for the women and babies of my vibrant community while continuing to reach out to underserved folks; including the queer community, aboriginal families, and women new to Canada. Part of my practice includes a volunteer position at the Aboriginal Mother’s Centre. I also enjoy incorporating the use of herbs into midwifery with those who are interested.
As a midwife, I am committed to offering supportive, responsive and personalized care that promotes your and your baby’s health. One of the things I love about this work is simply engaging with you; sharing stories and information, exploring care options and witnessing you create your identity as a family. Throughout this process I support your intuitive abilities as a parent while simultaneously offering you the knowledge, skills and experience I have gained in my 9 years as a practicing midwife. Alongside every family I work with, I continue to be both humbled and inspired.
A todas las mujeres embarazadas, me gustaria mucho proveerles servicios de parteria en Espanol!
