Astrid Fritsche
Hello! I am a second-year student
midwife at UBC, and I am very
excited to be learning this spring
from Allison Campbell, Beth Duncan
and their clients at
Pomegranate.
I come from an academic background in Women’s Health, and hold a BSc from UBC in
Genetics & Biopsychology, with a minor in Women’s Studies. However, my most educational and
poignant experiences have been earned while volunteering in public health clinics and a maternity
hospital in Ecuador, where women’s choices are severely limited by a lack of resources, and a
cultural and systemic control over their reproductive rights. It has made me so grateful for all of the
services we can access in Canada, and aware of our responsibility to promote and protect these
rights for all women. This is one of the many reasons I chose to pursue midwifery as a career.
As you go through this journey to parenthood, I am particularly thrilled to be experiencing the
beauty and the challenges of pregnancy at the same time as you are! My amazingly supportive
partner, Robin, and I are anticipating our first baby this June.
Thank you for your generosity and the time you take in teaching me over the next couple months. I
am honoured and look forward to being involved in your childbearing experience.
