ASHLEY KRUSE
Hello! I am a second-year student in the
Midwifery Education Program at UBC
and am thrilled to have the opportunity
to learn from the midwives and families
at Pomegranate this spring.
Thus far, my midwifery studies have
focused on classroom-based learning in a broad range of subjects from anatomy to pharmacology to health care ethics to the history and culture of birth. Of my own interest, I have also taken the Breastfeeding for Health Care Providers course at Douglas College and am excited to share what I know and learn more in this area.
Before beginning the midwifery program, I completed a degree in Psychology at UBC and then worked in the field of mental health for a short time. During this period of study and work, I also spent almost two years traveling to many parts of South America, Australia, and Asia. Through my travels around the world and here in Canada I began to learn more about the profession of midwifery and felt instantly drawn to it.
The passion I have for women’s health sits at the core of my calling to midwifery. It was awakened as an interest in my body when I began to develop as a young woman, grew as I started to make choices about my own health, guided my work as a doula and sexual health counsellor, and now provides a backdrop on my journey to become a midwife. I feel blessed to be embarking on a career that respects and empowers women to make choices about their reproductive health and maternity care.
When I am not admiring bellies and babies, I love to cook, sculpt with clay, and hike and cross-country ski in the mountains around BC. I look forward to getting to know the Pomegranate clients who I will have the pleasure to meet and thank you in advance for letting me take part in your pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. I appreciate you sharing these experiences with me.
