Vancouver Midwives | Community Midwifery in BC Lower Mainland

ALLISON CAMPBELL

I grew up in the Lower Mainland, and have lived in
East Vancouver for over a decade. I feel lucky that
through our clinic I am able to live and work my own
neighbourhood. Pregnancy, birth and parenting are
such social events, it’s important to me to feel
connected to the community that I am providing
midwifery care in.

My interest in midwifery stems from a commitment to working with women who are marginalized in society, such as those with lower incomes and queer women. Before becoming a midwife I worked with women who were involved in the criminal justice system, and I aim to continue this work as a midwife. In addition to my midwifery training at UBC, I completed a Master’s degree in sociology at Simon Fraser University, where I studied women’s federal prisons in Canada.

My future plans in addition to practicing midwifery include continuing to do research, particularly regarding increased access to midwifery care for all women. When time permits, I sometimes make quilts. Other times I visit my folks in Vernon, and try and do some volunteer work. I plan on having children in the next few years.
